PROGRAM & SCHEDULE

In Digital Art Class: Instruments of Discovery, you'll explore the fascinating tools scientists use to decode the universe – from microscopes and telescopes to curious gadgets of the past. Set in a digital immersive space, this workshop blends creativity and science as you learn digital art skills on iPad Pros using Procreate to draw from real museum objects. Be inspired by the intricate designs and stories behind these instruments of exploration and uncover the beauty in the machinery of discovery.

Old microscope made in 1910.
This microscope was a gift from Pietro Baracchi to Cyril Checchi around 1900 during his medical student days at the University of Melbourne.
Butterflies pinned to a board behind a display case set upon a table.

Drawing inspiration from Museum Victoria’s collection, insects offer a stunning array of shapes, colours and textures, perfect for artists and nature lovers alike. From the rainbow colouration of the Madagascan Sunset Moth to the iridescent beauty of the Jewel Beetle, these specimens tell stories of both attraction and warning.

These sessions welcome all skill levels and provide a guided experience to creatively capture the unique details of each insect, from their delicate wings to their intricate surface textures, using the natural beauty of insects as inspiration while learning new digital techniques.

Held monthly in the Learning Lab, Digital Art Class blends art, science and technology, where participants can explore digital drawing on iPad Pros.
