Emma Best, VCE VET Furnishing

Transcript

Emma designed and constructed a pair of handcrafted ‘nesting tables’ (so called as one, smaller, table is designed to be nested under the larger table for efficiency of space). Made primarily from Vic Ash with accents of Jarrah, both tables are circular, with the smaller table almost identical in form and construction to the larger table. Each table’s top is constructed from four quadrants of timber, precisely joined to (re)create a circle. By positioning each quadrant so that its grain runs perpendicular to that of its neighbouring quadrant, Emma brings a sense of movement and contrast to the tables’ surfaces. Further contrast comes from the difference in wood, that span from a pale sand colour through to a warm honey tone.

Each table top rests on a series of frames: vertical struts of timber joined at the top and bottom with a horizontally-positioned laminated rail that curves to correspond with the table’s overall circular footprint. On the smaller table, each quadrant is mounted on a separate frame, a small gap between each quadrant’s vertical struts, which emphasises that the table consists of multiple parts, despite the flush joinery of the table’s top. The larger table has only three frames; the fourth omitted to enable the smaller table to tuck in beneath it.

The tables’ polished surfaces gleam and reflect the light. As the exhibitor statement explains, “Together [these tables] form a functional and visual balance that celebrates Australian hardwood and fine craftsmanship.
